Dümmen Orange is an international leading breeding company focused on cut flowers, bulbs, tropical plants, pot plants, bedding plants and perennials. For our Research and Development department in De Lier, we are looking for a Research Assistant Phytopathology.

Job objective 

Our organization grows and flourishes. This results in a fast-changing and, therefore, challenging environment. As a Research Assistant Phytopathology, you support the development and execution of phytopathology bioassays and research experiments within defined phytopathology projects. 

The ideal candidate should be familiarized with plant pathology bioassays – involving fungi, bacteria, insects, and viruses – pathogen maintenance and plant culturing in greenhouses and controlled climates. Daily activities are dynamic, ranging from office based tasks to hands-on activities in the greenhouse, climate cell and laboratory. You work both independently and as part of a team within and between disciplines (including Genetics and Trait Discovery). You also work in close collaboration with members of the Technology Application team and report to the Project Lead Phytopathology. Depending on the season, your activities are based both in De Lier and Lisse, so flexibility between these locations is crucial. 

Your tasks and responsibilities

• Support in design, execute and analyze bio-assays.
• Interpret and report results obtained from experiments. 
• Support the writing of  literature reviews and protocols.
• Contribute to projects reports to effectively deliver quality data and communicate the results with the stakeholders and project teams. 
• Effectively plan activities according to project plans and timelines.
• Support in maintaining safe conditions for both the team members, the plants and the environment.
• Support other activities in the phytopathology and other research teams.
• Perform scouting activities for novel relevant methods, tools and technologies. 

Your profile

• BSc degree in plant sciences (or related topics).
• Minimum of two years of proven work experience in a relevant field of breeding technology.
• Experience with experimental design and data collection are crucial.
• Experience with data visualization and statistical analysis are preferred.
• Able to handle a diversity of activities and stakeholders.
• Able to work independently, within the phytopathology team and interdisciplinary teams.
• Analytical and critical mindset with strong problem solving and pro-active attitude.
• Excellent communication skills and good command of the English language, both verbal and written. Basic understanding of Dutch is preferred.
